Fretheim Hotel

This refurbished 1800s manor house is in Flåm, 200 metres from the Aurlandsfjord. It provides a restaurant, a large garden and free WiFi access. All rooms have views towards the Aurlandsfjord or the surrounding mountains. Fretheim Hotel’s individually decorated rooms feature a seating area, an electric kettle and a private bathroom. Amazing and Comfortable in a Wonderful Setting

Pros: The Fretheim Hotel is ideally situated across the road from the train station, the ferry wharf and the fjord. It is set back so there is no noise from either. The view over the fjord and mountains is breathtaking. We ate dinner at the hotel where the food was excellent. Perfectly cooked steak and a nice selection of sides (and drinks). The room was very comfortable and the hotel has a nice feel about it. The staff were very helpful and made our stay really comfortable.

Cons: Our room was in the old section of the hotel which is very comfortable and welcoming. However, the shower sits over an old style bath which could be treacherous. Slippery and very high sided so getting in and out of the shower requires some gymnastics.

Cons: It’s just Norway coming from Australia food is super expensive you really have to be careful for two people nothing fancy $125 Syd dollars everywhere

Beautiful Setting

Pros: A lovely hotel in a beautiful settting. Great staff.

Cons: Very expensive Buffet dinner ( Chritmas theme) definetly not worth the ZAR2000.00 pp Exchange rate of ZAR 1.65 to NOK 1.00

Nice - but I would consider alternatives if I visited the area again.

Pros: The hotel is very conveniently located for access to the train and the ferry, and that is what you are mostly paying for. The rooms are very basic - but not unlike any other good hotel. The included buffet breakfast was good and they had many options.

Cons: It did not really offer any great views of the Fjord.. I did have a room on the back of the hotel to save on cost- but even the common areas at the front of the hotel, with views of the Fjord, were not great... I am a photographer and was hoping to get some great shots - but had to go for a walk to do that.. For the price - you are simply paying for convenience to the train and ferry - and for that there is not better in the area.. At the same price point (I think I paid less) and I had world class views, the hotel I use as my gold standard is - The Hermitage Hotel, Mt Cook area of New Zealands South Island. And sadly the Fretheim Hotel did not meet that same standard for me, but feel free to do your own comparison. If I stayed in the area again I would consider an alternative.

Perfect for our 1 night stay.

Pros: Hotel met our needs for a 1 night stay after arriving in the afternoon from the Flåm train and departing in the morning on the fjord cruise. Breakfast was a good selection of hot and cold choices.our room was clean,, warm and a good size. We had a nice view of the little town and the water. Easy walk to train and ferry even in snow.

Cons: Lighting in room wasn’t bright.

Perfect for a short and sweet stay with possibly the best location, a friendly staff and fantastic food.

Pros: If you are doing Norway in a Nutshell, you cannot beat this location. Closest to train and the cruise and the best eateries.

Cons: The rooms are a bit small and bathrooms get messy after use. If you don’t have luggage and staying for a night or so, it’s fine but after that if will start to feel overwhelming.
